Unethical SEO Practices

Contact Us for More InformationAll web site owners want to achieve that elusive top ranking on the search engines. Many unethical SEO firms promise to produce these rankings without risk to the client. This could not be further from the truth. These "black hat" firms engage in many tactics that can be detrimental to the long term success of your on-line campaign. If you trust your on-line marketing to one of these companies, there is a very good chance your site will be banned from the search engine results. Some of these unethical practices include:

Site Cloaking
Cloaking can be defined as a highly optimized web page that is built only to be indexed by the search engines and not to be viewed by visitors. Web page visitors are automatically redirected to another more natural looking page. Cloaking is one of the most unethical SEO practices and using it will put your site at risk of being banned.

Duplicate Pages
Doubling the number of pages indexed by the search engines by using duplicate sites with different addresses will not have a positive effect on your ranking. Modern day search engine algorithms are programmed to filter these out from their results.

The Use of Invisible Text
Using text color identical to the background color of page has been one method used to artificially improve the ranking of a site. This method no longer will produce positive results. It is quite possible that you will be banned from the results of the search engines.

Using Small Text
Some site owners and SEO companies will try to hide dozens of keywords in tiny text form at the bottom of their pages. While this is not necessarily “illegal” in the search world, it is considered a controversial practice.

Link Farms
Link farms are a set of web pages that have been built for the sole purpose of increasing the number of incoming links to a web site. This is done in order to increase the link popularity of a site and increase search engine rankings. Using this tactic is likely to get your site penalized or banned from the major search engines.

Link farms should not be confused with reciprocal linking. Reciprocal linking is the trading of links between related web sites. When trading links with other sites it is important for the agreement to be mutually beneficial to both sites involved. Knowing how to spot an uneven trade is important part of a efficient link campaign.

Keywords in Hidden Value Tags
Placing your keywords within hidden tags is considered illegal by the search engines. Using this method can also get your site banned on search engines.

Keywords in Style Tag
This is another attempt by webmasters use to increase their ranking. The search engine algorithms also ignore these style tags.

Keywords in Comment Tags
Developers use comment tags to highlight certain sections of a web sites code so it s easier to perform updates or changes to the site. Some people believe that if they fill these tags with keywords their page will achieve better search engine results. Most major search engines filter out the comment tags when evaluating your web site.
